Atma Yoga Sets

 

Every Atma Yoga class is meant to be the continuation of your journey back to your original soul nature.

The essential equipment for this journey begins with three things, awareness of weight, attention to breath, and repetition of mantra.

As always in Atma yoga, your focus is on awareness of breath and weight. This will give you the most traction in healing and training the mind. Physically it is crucial to practice “coring up’ at the onset, middle and release of each pose.

As you become familiar with the sets use each pose as a meditation in paying attention. Pay attention to the experience of weight. Pay attention to what breathing feels like.

Whenever possible train your mind to focus on the deeper sensations of discomfort. When you choose to feel the body’s resistance to a pose you are training the mind.

Make a decision that you are not afraid of feeling anything. Inspect all the difficult sensations in your body with deepening and relentless interest.

The Body/Mind Goals of Atma Yoga are Four Fold:

1) To improve the health and well being of the aspirant by reducing negative consequences of chronic stress through improved breath awareness, revitalization of the endocrine system and detoxification by aiding the lymphatic system. Also, strengthening the individual immune system.

2) To recondition the nervous system allowing for increased mental stability and emotional flexibility, but more importantly to allow for expansion of consciousness (i.e shifts in the aspirant’s perspectives of reality that might otherwise be overwhelming.) Conversely Atma Yoga hopes to provide cultural knowledge that enhances individual perspective relative to external and internal stimuli. As perspective improves the influence of stressors decreases.

3) To improve the flow and function of subtle energy in relation to the system of chakras, vayu, and nadis. Also to channel energies within the aspirant which are in the mode of rajas (passion,) or tamas (sloth) into sattva (mode of goodness.) In this manner otherwise distracting or debilitating energies are rendered spiritually constructive. Also improving concentration, focus and an increasing ability to pay attention to subtler and subtler aspects of the self

4) Finally, Atma Yoga’s sets and programs are designed to awaken the sleeping soul that it may begin to emerge from its ego induced dream state. As the soul stirs, its inherent nature (peaceful, knowing, and constantly loving) begins to slowly emerge and dispel the limitations of an incomplete consciousness.
